SPRING BEAUTY
Polly Lazaron
Above a meandering stream,
banks and shore rich with thick mud,
looking for a crossing place.
I follow sinuous curves along
a hoof imprinted path laid by cows,
strewn with their dung,
fallen branches,
thorny tangles and spider webs.
A small, brown moth flits by seemingly out of nowhere.
As sure a way sign as any.
This way, beneath a brilliant blue expanse of sky
contrasted by the soft, delicate greens of only this early in the season.
Budding leaves and thick, lacy curls of lichen adorn the trees.
The stream and frogs sing steadily, strongly, replenished by rain.
Just above the soil,
illuminated within and by sunlight,
a small, white blossom hovers.
A presence of such symmetry and grace with
delicate, pink lines striping the five, simple petals
atop a narrow stalk between two slender, mouse tail length leaves.
Already kneeling in wonder as the fragrance
reaches out with a heart opening, astonishing strength,
I am filled and embraced by the scent of
a Spring Beauty.
In this moment we dance,
as one infinite spirit.
As sure a way sign as any.
Now, I see.
Near this one bloom there are others.
Just beyond is a place,
narrow enough to cross
where the stream shallows,
flowing over wide, flat, grey stones.
This is a way.
